Lt. Governor Dewhurst Announces Interim Criminal Justice Charge
AUSTIN — Today, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst issued his latest Interim Charge with a directive to the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice to study sentencing in intoxication manslaughter cases.
"Having lost my own father to a drunk driver in my youth, I have a particular interest in this issue because I know the devastation it causes," said Dewhurst. "I am wholeheartedly committed to the safety of our citizens and believe that recent cases indicate existing sentencing options may leave justice undone."
Dewhurst instructed the Committee leadership to focus its efforts on:
SENTENCING FOR INTOXICATION MANSLAUGHTER CASES. Dewhurst instructed the committee to review cases involving the imposition of probation rather than imprisonment or commitment for adult and juvenile intoxication manslaughter offenders. He also asked the committee to make recommendations to ensure that intoxication manslaughter sentences include appropriate punishment levels, maintain public safety, and serve to deter driving under the influence.
"The decision to drive under the influence is the cause of entirely too much pain, injury and death in Texas," concluded Dewhurst. "As with any crime in Texas, we must ensure justice is served."
Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst will continue to release his interim charges in the coming weeks.
