Texas Senate Update from Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick

Continuing to Fight for Fiscal Discipline

As a state senator, I repeatedly filed bills to make the state spending limit more strict. During my eight years in the state senate, these bills were bottled up in committee.

As Lieutenant Governor, I know Texans expect their leadership to be fiscally responsible and the senate is delivering.

Early this week, Senator Kelly Hancock filed Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) and Senate Joint Resolution 2 (SJR 2) putting Texas one step closer to achieving true fiscal discipline and efficiency. These bills will change the current cap to ensure that the growth of state spending does not exceed the growth in our population plus inflation.

I am pleased to once again advance this cause and support Senator Hancock’s efforts to reinforce constitutional spending limits.

As Lt. Governor, I intend to see final passage of this much needed legislation, SB 9 and SJR 2, during this 84th legislative session.

The senate bills filed were:

  • SJR 2 – Hancock: Relating to the constitutional limit on the rate of growth of appropriations.
  • SB 9 – Hancock: Proposing a constitutional amendment concerning the limitation on the rate of growth in appropriations.

A Clean Start in Taking the Lead in Natural Gas Vehicles

On Thursday, I joined Senator Carlos Uresti to announce the filing of Senate Bill 12 (SB 12), which will put Texas in the lead for natural gas vehicles in state agencies and local governments. Natural gas is cheap, it’s clean, it’s here in Texas; and will save taxpayers millions of dollars in fuel costs.

Senate Bill 12 (SB 12) is a priority of mine because it will allow Texas to become a leader in natural gas vehicles while strengthening our economy.
