Lt. Governor Patrick Statement on Passage of Property Tax Relief and Reform

AUSTIN – “Today, the Texas Senate approved and sent Senate Bill 1760 (SB 1760) by Senator Brandon Creighton to the Governor to become law.

“SB 1760 is a cornerstone bill that requires all local taxing districts that wish to exceed the effective tax rate over the previous year to first have a vote of at least 60% of the governing body in support of the tax increase. This bill enhances transparency and holds local taxing districts accountable to the taxpayers.

“No longer can a governmental body’s operating budget increase automatically, without the governmental officials voting to raise property taxes.

“Since the beginning of session our senators have been working hard to provide lasting property tax relief for homeowners and businesses across the state.

“I am extremely proud to be able to say that after several years effort with similar legislation as a senator, this bill is now on its way to Governor Abbott’s desk for his signature,” continued Patrick.

“It has been a pleasure to work with leadership and my colleagues on the final details of Senate Bill 1760,” said Senator Brandon Creighton. “Its passage today is a major win for property owners across the state and will bring them the lasting property tax relief they deserve.”

“This bill, along with Senate Bill 1, increasing the homestead exemption, are the first two steps in delivering property tax relief and reform,” concluded Patrick.
