Statement by Lt. Governor Patrick on Syrian Refugees Relocating to Texas

AUSTIN – “I fully support Governor Abbott’s decision to not accept any refugees from Syria in light of the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris. The threat of another terrorist attack on any country is real and Texas must always remain vigilant.

“All Texans are shocked at the barbarism of the ISIS attacks in Paris Friday. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grapple with the tragic loss. We, however, must take appropriate steps to keep Texans safe – and Governor Abbott has taken that first step.

“Texas has a long history of welcoming refugees and displaced people from around the world. Recall that thousands who were left homeless after Hurricane Katrina found new homes and welcoming arms in Texas. We adhere to Judeo-Christian principles and stand ready to help those in need, but not at the expense of the safety and security of our own people.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of these heinous attacks. Justice will be served and Texas will take the appropriate steps to thwart further attacks on our proud nation of law and order.”
